The west end of Edinburgh is a great wee area for bars and restaurants these days.

According to their Facebook page, Foundry39 is¬†“on a mission to serve up the best cocktails, craft beers, sourdough pizzas and adventurous burgers in your neighbourhood!” With a wealth of cocktail and bars in Edinburgh, will they be able to achieve this? Read on to find out… ūüėČ

The restaurant is pretty big inside so it could be at risk of being a bit chilly or lacking soul but the guys behind Foundry39 have got the décor spot on. Lots of copper finishes and vintage knick-knacks dotted around ensure it to be a very cosy yet spacious environment to relax in.

The food

The menu has something for everyone. There is a hint of Pizza Express meets Burger but they definitely have their own stamp¬†on their dishes. We decided to start with a classic to test the waters…

Garlic dough balls Р£4

These were delicious and not too stodgy at all. So flavoursome with the¬†garlic and light and fluffy in texture. We also cheekily asked for a side of the blue cheese mayo that was served up with another starter, the fried pickles. This was an excellent accompaniment as it wasn’t just blue cheese-flavoured, processed nonsense; it actually had lumps of delicious cheese in it.

Beef ragu & chorizo sourdough pizza Р£11.50

If you like thin base pizzas then you’ll love this. Honestly one of the best, lightest pizzas I’ve had in I don’t know how long! The toppings included parma ham, chorizo Iberico, beef ragu, salami pepperoni – YUUUUMMMM!!!

My eyes were bigger than my belly so I couldn’t finish it all but they were more than happy to box up my leftovers so I could have it again for breakfast the next day.

Buffalo blue cheese & chicken Р£8.95

My husband was torn between a couple of burgers but he opted for the buttermilk fried chicken, hot sauce, little gem lettuce and blue cheese mayonnaise. It was an absolute winner!

Sweet potato fries Р£3.50

Tasty, well seasoned and a decent amount of them. Enough said!

Bacon mac & cheese Р£3.50

I was maybe a little ambitious getting this as a side but it was delicious. I might even just get this as a main meal if I went back at lunch time.

To finish up we decided to share the cheesecake. The photo above doesn’t do it justice but it was huge! We couldn’t even finish it between the two of us. However, it was delicious so if you decide to order it I’m sure you won’t be short of someone to help you out.

The drinks

Foundry39 pride themselves on their smoked cocktails. When you walk in you are instantly hit with the smokey aroma and I loved it. We tried a few different smoked cocktails and I loved the theatre as they deliver them to your table and remove the cloche to let the smoke surround you.

We sampled a variety of cocktails:

  • Maple-Smoked Old Fashioned – Bulleit Bourbon, maple syrup, bacon bitters, pecan-smoked – ¬£7.95
  • Smoked Rhubarb + Rosemary Daiquiri – Rosemary-smoked Havana 3YO Rum, rhubarb liqueur, lime juice, sugar syrup, juniper-smoked – ¬£7.50
  • Peach + Rhubarb Bellini – Prosecco, white peach pur√©e, rhubarb liqueur – ¬£8.25
  • Far Eastern Orchard – Lemongrass-infused Absolut Vodka, lemon juice, lychee juice, coconut cream, vanilla syrup – ¬£7.50
  • Kurant Affairs – Absolut Kurant Vodka, Prosecco, Cr√®me de Cassis, lemon juice – ¬£8.25

Two days after we visited for dinner we returned to try out their brunch menu. I couldn’t ignore the lure of eggs Benedict with Marmite(!!!) hollandaise now could I?

Foundry39, Edinburgh

Even if you don’t like Marmite I would still try this dish. The taste is very subtle so it goes without saying that next time I visit for brunch I’ll be asking for extra Marmite in mine! It was delicious but I was slightly disappointed that there wasn’t quite enough hollandaise for my liking. It’s high praise indeed that the only fault I encountered during¬†my two visits was that I wanted more of this delicious sauce.

The verdict

Overall we had an absolutely fantastic visit and can’t wait to go back.

Disclaimer: Our meal and drinks at Foundry39 on the Friday night was kindly provided for free but this did not sway my review at all. I was 100% honest and very grateful to have been given this opportunity. We returned for brunch as fully paying customers because we loved it so much.
