This year has been a bit lacking in holidays for my partner and I as we are saving for our wedding next year, so when I was invited to stay at the Marriott hotel in Edinburgh I jumped at the chance to escape on a mini staycation!
We chose a weekend in September which worked out perfectly as that seemed to be when the Scottish summer made an appearance. We live in Leith so we drove across to the other side of Edinburgh, towards the way to the airport, for our night away at The Marriott.
I’ll be honest, the hotel isn’t much of a looker from the outside but inside it has everything you need. The staff on reception were lovely when we checked in and it’s actually a pretty large hotel. We headed up to our room and were greeted by a towel elephant on our bed – it really is the little things in life!
I can be pretty fussy when it comes to hotel beds but this one was huge and very comfy. It had lovely big feather pillows which I’m not actually a fan of but I think I’m in the minority. In our bathroom there was a range of L’OCCITANE toiletries which were really good quality. The shower also floated my boat due to the decent power and the fact that the shower head was detachable so you could just wash your hair if you wanted – big tick for that! The curtains were great at blocking out the light and as the hotel is pretty quiet, we both had a great nights sleep.
After getting settled in we grabbed our swimwear and headed down to the pool for a quick dip and soak in the jacuzzi. Obviously no photos of this but it was pretty decent. The changing rooms were undergoing a bit of work so when I changed into my bikini I had to nip through the gym reception to the pool, which was totally fine as you were given a towel anyway. In addition to the pool and jacuzzi there were also lots of lounges to relax on and stay dry, plus a sauna and a steam room.
We were actually heading to a wedding in the evening so we made the most of our elite membership access and enjoyed some complimentary drinks and nibbles in the elite lounge. There was a plentiful cheese board so I was delighted! This was also where we had breakfast on the Sunday morning (hence the croissant and sausages).
During our stay we were leant an electric car as the hotel has their own electric car charging points (which we found out are few and far between in Edinburgh). We were handed the keys on the Sunday morning from the hotel reception and off we went to find our wee Nissan Leaf in the car park. I unlocked the car, got in, pressed the on button… then what?! How do you make it GO? A couple of YouTube videos later and we were on the move; very, very quietly – electric cars are like ghosts, they barely make any noise.
The sun was shining and it was a beautiful, crisp day so we decided to head off to North Berwick to soak up some rays by the beach. The coastal drive there from Edinburgh is beautiful; we took the route below.
I also visited one of my favourite shops, Time&Tide where I bought the pyjamas plaque below – my new life motto. We bought some chips and sat on the beach in the sun eating them. No British trip to the beach would be complete without a 99 with a Flake.
After this we headed back to drop the car at the hotel and it was a little touch and go as to whether we had enough power to make it. I think we pushed it to the limit of how far you could go without needing an re-charge. We plugged it back in at the hotel which was really simple, just like plugging in your phone to charge but just with a bigger cable.
Would we stay here again?
We had an absolutely fantastic couple of days staying at The Marriott. If you’re staying in Edinburgh then it’s a great base to explore from; close to the airport and major roads to visit other areas in Scotland. You can also easily get a bus into the centre of Edinburgh if you want to visit the castle, dungeon, zoo or sample some of the many bars and restaurants.
If you are visiting Edinburgh and it’s a sunny day then I would also recommend taking a trip out to Gullane and North Berwick if yo can. You could even hire an electric car to take you there!
