May was all about Surgeons’ Hall in Edinburgh. One weekend I was invited to attend a Scandal at Surgeons’ Hall organised by the museums and the next I attended my yearly Whisky Stramash.

Surgeons’ Hall is a beautiful venue in the heart of Edinburgh, just across the road from the Festival Theatre on Nicolson Street. It’s a development by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and can be hired for conferences, meetings, weddings or other events.

‘Only ten minutes away from Princes Street and Edinburgh Castle, Surgeons’ Hall can accommodate between 10 – 300 guests and provides a truly unique venue in which to host your conference or event within the historic City of Medicine. Our hotel, Ten Hill Place, allows you to accommodate your guests or conference delegates in comfort and is situated adjacent to your chosen conference venue.  Ten Hill Place Hotel was recently awarded Conference Hotel of the Year 2014 at the Scottish Hotel Awards.‘ (source:

A Scandal at Surgeons’ Hall

When I was invited to attend A Scandal in Surgeons’ Hall I was very excited, especially as my friend and I were treated to a wee Victorian/Steampunk makeover at the fabulous Miss Disxiebelle vintage hair and beauty parlour in Bruntsfield, Edinburgh. I’ve had my hair and makeup done by these lovely ladies a few times and it’s always fantastic

I love the flamingo wallpaper in the Miss Dixiebelle salon.

I loved my huge steampunk hair!

We definitely looked the part when we got to the event. Here we took part in a murder mystery (it was a bit too complicated so we decided to leave it to the professionals), had our “future” told to us by a tarot card reader (sceptical!) and embraced a ceilidh by having a glass of wine or two whilst mingling with other guests.

We also bumped into a couple of other lovely Edinburgh bloggers there; Laura from and Gillian from

Whisky Stramash

The weekend after the scandal event we were back at Surgeons’ Hall for Whisky Stramash. This was my third year in a row at this shindig. It’s always a great day out with friends, sampling lots of different whiskies and meeting a range of people. The weather is usually *touch wood* pretty glorious too. This year was no exception! The sun was shining and our spirits were sky high.

The event is held across a couple of buildings at Surgeon’s Hall and between the buildings is a courtyard area so if you need a break from sampling whiskies then it’s great to hang out here and get some sun.
To be honest, this year’s Stramash was a little disappointing as it definitely seemed a fair bit smaller than previous years, e.g. fewer brands and stalls. However we still made the most of it and sampled lots of different whiskies.

We attended a wee session by the Edinburgh Whisky Blog. These guys were great and very entertaining. If you haven’t seen their blog before then it’s definitely worth having a peak (link above).

One of the rooms was converted into an old speakeasy bar. Here we enjoyed whisky in a teacup whilst perching on straw bales.

Oh, did I mention… we also got trapped in a whisky glass!

Surgeons’ Hall is a great venue so if you ever get the chance to go to an event here I really recommend it. If you haven’t been to Miss Dixiebelle and/or Whisky Stramash then you definitely need to get to both of them too!
