Last year I visited to The Magnum for the first time. My friend and I went for a girly Christmas dinner date. We had a three course festive feast with Christmas crackers and everything! It was brilliant and I fell in love with the restaurant.

When I was recently asked if I’d like to review the restaurant for my blog I jumped at the chance. Last Thursday I took my boyfriend here for a lovely dinner before he headed to London for a long weekend with the boys. It was the perfect send off.

Any place that has fairy lights is a winner in my books and The Magnum has a wealth of them!

Inside it has a lovely cosy atmosphere. The windows are covered with strips of fairy lights which I absolutely love. There is also a wee fire place although I have no idea if it works. Might make it a bit too snug.

In the summer there is also an outdoor seating area which is perfect for a post work vino in the sun.

The waiting staff are all absolutely lovely. There are super keen to answer any questions and get you anything you need. You might think that was just because I was invited there to review it but I have been a couple of times before and this is consistent.

As we browsed the menu we ordered our drinks. I opted for the house red which I have had before and it is genuinely one of the best house red wines I’ve had.

The starters

To start with my other half had Cullen Skink which came with a slice of cheese on toast. Both were very tasty and he was in his element. I loved the cheesy toast as an alternative to plain bread or croutons. Anything with added cheese is going to win a place in my heart!

For my starter I opted for one of my favourites; haggis, neeps and tatties! This was delicious but maybe a little large as a starter. They do offer it as a main too but I think the starter size could be slightly smaller. It does sound a ridiculous first world problem to have – “oh no, my delicious starter is a bit big and now I’m too full” – but this feedback is said in the nicest possible way.

I love sauces and gravies on my food and this whisky and thyme cream sauce did not disappoint. I often worry that there won’t be enough sauce or gravy but they got this spot on. Massive thumbs up and I would definitely order again!

The main event

Although I’m not a vegetarian I do love veg and often opt for the meat-free options on a menu and this was exactly what I decided on this visit. I nearly went for the venison but as I’d tried this on a previous visit when someone else ordered it (it was scrumptious) I thought I’d go for something totally different.

The veggie dish was an open lasagne with a filling of creamy goats cheese, salsa verde and cherry tomatoes. I loved the way it was served and all of the elements of the lasagne went together perfectly. There was lots of goats cheese in it and it was incredibly creamy and tasty. It was served with a courgette noodle tangle which was lovely and refreshing and a few smoked cheese fritters. As much as I love cheese, unfortunately these fritters let the dish down a little, I just don’t think they were needed. Everything else was so light and fresh, I just didn’t feel they needed to be there. But they were nice anyway.

My other half ordered the steak and as it arrived he reminded me of the following:

“A good steak is the measure of a good restaurant”

So no pressure for The Magnum whatsoever! As he tucked in he preceded to tell me that The Magnum did not disappoint and it was

“An outstanding cut of medium rare meat, succulent and juicy and peppered with… well… pepper.”

One very happy customer! I’m not a massive steak eater but I tried some too and it was divine.

The solitary pudding

When it comes to the dessert, there are usually only two things I’ll look for;

  1. Fruit crumble and custard, or
  2. A cheeseboard!

Sadly very few places seem to offer any sort of dessert with custard these days (hint hint!), I think I’m just a bit too 80s in that respect. Even if The Magnum had offered crumble and custard I was far too stuffed to go there. They did have a cheeseboard but I was also too full for these, plus I’d had lots of cheese in my main.

Therefore, we both compromised and shared the chocolate fudge cake. This was delicious (coming from someone with a very tiny sweet tooth) and it was surprisingly light. We devoured the lot with a spoon each.

After the meal we were stuffed to the brim and incredibly happy. This was a complimentary feast but we were going to pay for the drinks so we asked for the bill. The manager then came out to see us again (he had a quick chat when we first sat down) and said that we didn’t need to pay for a thing. He was incredibly friendly and this was a very kind gesture.

Unfortunately this through me a bit and I forgot to leave a tip. I have felt guilty ever since and I feel like the worst person. So this is my apology to The Magnum – I am so sorry! Your staff are an absolute credit to you and they couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful. I have been before and I will definitely be back again. On my return I will be sure to bring all of my friends and rectify my tip faux pas.

The end

The Magnum is wonderful for just about any occasion; a cosy date, dinner with the family or friends, a birthday meal. It is a great all rounder restaurant and bar. It must be one of Edinburgh’s hidden gems so go and seek it out to try it for yourselves. See you there!
